Profile
The Brothers of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (SHJ) is an indigenous educational and social service society with deep roots in India, having been established on 11 February 1903 in Irudayakulam, Tamil Nadu. The society’s foundational purpose is the upliftment of the poor, marginalised and underprivileged, utilising education as a primary tool for profound social transformation. Their operations are guided by a people-centred vision and strong ethical values, aimed at fostering integral human development through community-oriented initiatives and social outreach.
The mission of the SHJ Brothers focuses on inclusive growth and empowerment through learning, with a particular emphasis on serving economically and socially disadvantaged communities. Today, the society has expanded its reach across various regions of India. Their diverse educational portfolio includes: Primary and Secondary Education: Schools following both CBSE and State Board (English medium) curricula. Higher Education: Arts and science colleges, as well as nursing colleges. Vocational and Professional Training: Technical and professional institutions, alongside initiatives in printing, agriculture, and social development. This integrated approach allows the society to remain responsive to the evolving needs of contemporary society.
The Dhani College Initiative
In 2006, the Brothers registered the Asha Kiran Action Society under the Society Registration Act to facilitate specific developmental goals. A key vision of this society was to establish a college in Dhani, Dhar District, to serve a large population of students from adjacent villages who were historically deprived of higher education due to severe poverty. Established in 2019, this college serves as a beacon of hope for rural students. It is a service-oriented, self-financing institution recognised by the Government of Madhya Pradesh and affiliated with Devi Ahilya Vishvavidyalaya, Indore.
Educational Philosophy and Academic Programmes
The college operates under the evocative motto: “Educate the mind, Empower the heart, Enlighten the soul”. It prioritises value-based education and focuses on the holistic development of youth who are often socially marginalised and lack access to decent employment. To address these needs, the institution offers integrated livelihood skills and training programmes designed to promote employment opportunities and foster an equitable social order.
The current academic offerings include five Undergraduate (UG) programmes and one Postgraduate (PG) programme: 1. B.Sc.: Specialisations in Horticulture, Seed Technology, and Botany. 2. B.Sc.: A combination of Botany, Chemistry, and Zoology. 3. B.A.: Combinations including Economics, History, and Computer Applications. 4. B.A.: Economics, History, and English Literature. 5. B.A.: Computer Applications, Political Science, and Sociology. 6. M.A.: Political Science.
Academic Excellence and Faculty
The institution is committed to a continuous journey of quality education, supported by an efficient faculty and an updated curriculum. This academic rigour ensures that students emerge not only as qualified academicians but also as individuals with strong human values. The success of this approach is reflected in the college’s track record, as it consistently produces university rank holders.
The work of the SHJ Brothers in Dhani can be compared to cultivating a garden in a drought-prone region; by providing the “water” of education and the “nutrients” of vocational skills, they enable student.
